The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities established the HACU Hall of Champions to honor those who embody the mission of the Association through exemplary efforts “To Champion Hispanic Success in Higher Education.” The 2016 HACU Hall of Champions inductees were the Honorable Ruben Hinojosa and Max Castillo, Ed.D., who were honored on October 8, 2016, during HACU’s 30th Annual Conference.
Rubén Hinojosa represented the 15th Congressional District of Texas from 1997 to 2017. He served on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Financial Services. Hinojosa also served as ranking member of the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training, chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and co-chair of the caucus’ Education Task Force.
His initiatives included a $510 million investment in minority-serving institutions and a program supporting graduate degree attainment at Hispanic-Serving Institutions.
He received numerous recognitions, including the naming of two elementary schools in his honor, the Rubén Hinojosa Highway and the Industrial Park in the Delta Region, and a Regents Endowment Professorship in perpetuity at The University of Texas at Austin. He was recognized with the Hispanic Heritage Award from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, the MALDEF Lifetime Achievement Award, Excellence in Government, and the American Society for Public Service award.
Hinojosa earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree from the University of Texas Edinburg.
