HACU to host virtual fireside chat with Ambassador Ken Salazar, author of Borderlands

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) will host a virtual fireside chat with Ambassador Ken Salazar on Oct. 15, 2026, at 2 p.m. CT. HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores will join Salazar, author of Borderlands: My Fight for an Inclusive America, for a discussion moderated by Our Lady of the Lake University President Abel A. Chávez.

Salazar grew up on his family’s ranch in Colorado’s San Luis Valley and was the first in his family to attend college. He went on to serve as Colorado’s attorney general, U.S. senator, secretary of the interior, and U.S. ambassador to Mexico. In Borderlands, Salazar reflects on hisexperience and makes the case for a stronger, more inclusive America.

The conversation will explore the influence of family and education on public service, the role of higher education in developing future leaders, and how Hispanic-Serving Institutions can prepare students for leadership. Additional topics include bridging political and cultural divides, strengthening U.S.-Mexico relations, and expanding opportunities for cross-border collaboration in education, research and workforce development.

Salazar will share how institutions can bring Borderlands to their students through One Book, More Voices, a new effort of the Borderlands New North American Alliance Fund to provide matching copies of the book for classrooms, libraries, and student programs.

This webinar is open to HACU-member institutions and partners. College and university presidents, faculty, and staff in political science, history, Chicano/Latino and Southwest studies, international relations, and public policy are encouraged to attend and to share it with their students.
