The Global Engagement department leads HACU’s work abroad with its membership in the U.S. to enhance participation in international education programs and opportunities, and increase student, faculty and administrator mobility from affiliated universities in other countries.

Conferences and Events
HACU’s international conferences and symposiums advance the global engagement of Hispanic-Serving Institutions and their stakeholders. These events are a platform for academic leaders, policymakers, educators, and students to come together and address the challenges and opportunities in international education. By bringing diverse voices to the table, HACU fosters a collaborative environment where innovative ideas and best practices can be shared across borders. The integration of both professional and student tracks ensures participants at all levels can gain valuable insights, develop new skills, and expand their global networks. enhances professional development and empowers students to become active contributors to the global academic community.
Including HACU’s Leadership Academy/La Academia de Liderazgo in these conferences underscores HACU’s commitment to cultivating the next generation of leaders in higher education. This leadership academy provides intensive training and mentorship for mid- and senior-level administrators, equipping them with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of higher education both domestically and internationally. By integrating this program into its international events, HACU ensures participants can benefit from global perspectives and experiences, further enriching their leadership development. This approach combines professional growth, student empowerment, and leadership training, making HACU’s international conferences and symposiums a cornerstone of its mission to elevate participation and leadership in the global academic landscape.
Global Faculty Exchange
The global exchange program connects our national and international affiliate institutions with faculty, researchers and administrators interested in domestic or international professional sabbaticals, summer sessions, etc. Individuals and the host institutions mutually benefit from visiting professorships, administrator exchanges, joint research, and other opportunities offered in-person or virtually.
Commission on International Education
The Commission on International Education provides guidance, advice and support to HACU in the following ways:
- Guidance, information and appropriate contacts to establish international programs.
- Promoting opportunities available to students, faculty, and administrators at member institutions.
- Identifying potential sources of support for international programs
- Advance HACU’s advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C. to secure federal support for the development of international program opportunities for member institutions
Membership
An institution of higher education abroad that documents that it is a legally constituted entity authorized to operate in its country according to the rules and regulations required by its government.
International Annual Membership Dues:
$ 2,500 USD

Membership Directory
HACU’s website features a Membership Directory. International members can access detailed information using a code only available to member institutions, including names of member institution presidents, Hispanic student and total enrollment at U.S. member institutions, and the three main study programs for international member institutions.

HACU’s website receives more than 180,000 visits a month from member institutions, corporations, federal agencies and other stakeholders in Hispanic higher education success. International members are promoted and included in HACU’s Membership Directory. HACU can promote international member institution programs in our “International Opportunities” page on request.

International Visits
HACU’s visits to Spain forge strong academic ties between their universities and U.S. Hispanic-Serving Institutions, cultivating partnerships, enhancing educational and cultural exchanges, and enabling greater mobility for students, faculty, and administrators. In collaboration with Spanish institutions, HACU expands opportunities for Hispanic students to engage in study abroad programs, joint research, and other international initiatives that deepen their academic and cultural understanding. These efforts strengthen the historical and cultural connections between the U.S. and Spain and contribute to a more inclusive and diverse global academic community. HACU is committed to enriching the education of Hispanic students and promoting cross-border collaboration in higher education.
HACU’s Latin American visits are strategic efforts to strengthen partnerships between Hispanic-Serving Institutions in the U.S. and universities across the region, focused on fostering academic collaborations, enhancing student and faculty exchange programs, and promoting joint research initiatives. Engaging directly with Latin American educational leaders and institutions, HACU creates opportunities for Hispanic students and educators to participate in meaningful international experiences. These visits are instrumental in expanding the global reach of HACU’s member institutions, promoting cross-cultural understanding, and addressing the underrepresentation of Hispanic students in international education. These engagements reinforces HACU commitment to building a more inclusive and interconnected academic community throughout the Americas.

HACU’s Caribbean visits establish and deepen collaborations between educational institutions across the region and Hispanic-Serving Institutions in the U.S., developing academic partnerships enhancing student and faculty mobility, supporting joint research endeavors and promoting cultural exchange. Connecting with Caribbean universities and educational leaders creates pathways for Hispanic students to engage in unique international learning experiences, broadening their perspectives and academic opportunities. These efforts are crucial to strengthening ties between U.S. and Caribbean institutions, fostering mutual understanding and addressing the need for greater Hispanic representation in global education. HACU is committed to building a more diverse and globally connected academic network within the Caribbean.
