Established in June 2024, the Midwestern Regional office serves HACU-member institutions in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Each state has unique educational systems and priorities requiring unique services for Hispanic-Serving Institutions and the students they serve. The MRO has been actively exploring the opportunities and priorities of HSIs and the region since its establishment.

The Midwestern Regional Office advocates for funding aligned with the federal agenda for the following areas:

  • An Advisory Board for the Governor and Legislators
  • Recognizing HSIs for their contribution to each state
  • Building HSI capacity
  • Scholarships for students
  • Funding to implement the HERE Act
  • Funding to implement Voces Nuevas in each state

Each of these initiatives contribute to the success of HSI students and improve each state’s economic capacity. MRO staff also works with local colleges and universities to develop programs and obtain funding.

The MRO will form an Advisory Board as part of its mission to provide advice to regional legislative staff on new programs, advocacy priorities and funding sources. The Advisory Board will be made up of presidents from all areas of higher education, leaders of Hispanic Serving School Districts (HSSD), business partners, regional leaders in education and other stakeholders.

HSSDs are important and growing in each state and should be included in the planning of programs and services.
