Overview

 

The Institute for Hispanic Financial Education and Competencies (IHFEC) financial education pilot program, in partnership with local institutions and school districts in the San Antonio area, is designed to assist Hispanic students and their families at those institutions develop proficiency skills in financial matters at various life-stages in their education journey.

The following are the three goals of the HACU/USAA pilot program:

  • Help high school students and their parents understand and effectively manage family finances and student financial aid opportunities for college success.

  • Train high school and college students to maneuver the complexities of financial assistance, credit worthiness, and long-term strategies to ensure their financial independence and well-being.

  • Teach students enrolled in business courses about small-business management and financing and to serve as a resource for the Latino family-owned small business community.

Curriculum and Resources
 

Curriculum Overview

High School Curriculum: HACU will supplement the Personal Financial Literacy high school curriculum by providing experiential learning opportunities and culturally relevant content for Hispanic and first-generation students. HACU will collaborate with relevant stakeholders to deliver the curriculum.

Freshman Student Success: HACU has partnered with the colleges and universities to enrich the financial education component in the Freshman Student Success course. Students will learn about ways to manage their financial resources, save money and minimize debt. Additionally, students will learn about long-term financial planning, such as investment strategies, retirement funds, mortgage loans and financial independence.

USAA Scholarships and HACU Scholars Engagement: High school seniors that participate in the program will be invited to apply for a scholarship of $1,000 towards their freshman year at one of the five college/university partner institutions. Fifty scholarships will be awarded for the Fall 2023. HACU will offer online key components of the college-level curriculum to HACU scholars to help strengthen their financial competency and wellness.

Entrepreneurial Program: HACU will collaborate with business faculty from each of the partnering campuses teaching an entrepreneurial course to expand on the small business experience by providing resources for extracurricular activities and experiences relevant to the Latino small business community. Stipends will be made available to the students who wish to mentor and support the high school students in the program.

2022-23 Partner Schools

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) has partnered with five colleges and universities including Our Lady of the Lake University, Palo Alto College, San Antonio College, St. Philip's College and the University of Texas at San Antonio. HACU will additionally partner with five Hispanic-Serving School Districts in the San Antonio Area.
