HACU statement on the California wildfires

SAN ANTONIO – The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities has issued the following statement from HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores on the wildfires being battled in Los Angeles County and Southern California.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to those suffering the loss of loved ones and the devastation to their communities in Los Angeles County and Southern California. The destruction to the environment and its looming effects to the health and well-being of the residents are already being felt in the region. HACU is hopeful that the federal government assistance approved by President Biden will give the aid needed to provide support and resources, and we encourage further assistance from the incoming administration. We are especially aware of what this may mean to the education systems throughout the area, as some schools were damaged by fire and nearly half a million prek-12 students were out of class for safety reasons. Colleges and universities have also been deeply affected by the wildfires, and the strain of social services due to increased demand will disrupt lives extending beyond the immediate crisis. The regional emergency will challenge communities in profound and lasting ways. HACU stands ready to help and assist in any way possible to ensure our institutions and the students they serve receive the resources needed.”
