HACU presents awards at premier events of its 37th Annual Conference on Hispanic higher education, Oct. 28-30, 2023
The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities presented eleven awards at its 37th Annual Conference “Championing Hispanic Higher Education Success: Diversifying Our Workforce and Strengthening America,” on Oct. 28-30, 2023. Two were presented at the Opening Plenary and eight awards during the premier events of its conference.
During the Power Lunch on Oct. 29, Chancellor of Alamo Colleges District and HACU Governing Board Chair Mike Flores served as convener and presented a certificate of appreciation from the City of San Antonio to HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores.
Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT) was the recipient of the Exemplary Policy/Advocacy Leadership Award and gave remarks to attendees via pre-recorded video address. Hudson County Community College was recipient of the Outstanding HACU-Member Institution Award with HCCC President Chris Reber accepting on their behalf. The United Services Automobile Association (USAA) was recognized as the recipient of the Extraordinary Philanthropic Partner Award.
Partner and sponsor remarks were given by representatives from USAID, Deloitte, All of Us Research Program, CIA, Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Fidelity Investments, and Corteva Agriscience.
During the Partnership Lunch on Oct. 30, Superintendent of San Bernardino County Schools Ted Alejandre served as convenor.
Kia was the recipient of the Outstanding Private Sector Partner Award with Regional Retail Marketing Manager Jerry O’Sullivan accepting on their behalf. The U.S. Department of State was the recipient of the Outstanding Public Sector Partner Award with Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for educational and cultural affairs Scott Weinhold accepting on their behalf.
President of Universidad de Iberoamérica Emma Grace Hernández Flores received the President’s Award of Excellence and gave remarks followed by Operations Advisor of Export-Import Bank José Antonio “Tony” Pérez, who received the Alicia Casanova Award. Michael A. Olivas was recognized with the HACU Lifelong Leadership Award with his wife Augustina Reyes accepting on his behalf.
Partner and sponsor remarks were given by representatives from Southwest Airlines, Nordstrom, Sixth Street, and the Environmental Protection Agency. U.S. Army Cadet Command gave remarks and presented over $600,000 in scholarships to three students.
Closing the event, Vice President of Corporate and External Affairs at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises Luis Rosero announced a partnership with Northeastern Illinois University and the Telemundo Academy.
During the Networking Dinner on Oct. 30, students from the University of the Incarnate Word and Florida International University were presented with the Jose R. Ruano – Student Leadership Award.
Partner and sponsor remarks were given by representatives from Molson Coors, NOAA, U.S. Coast Guard and the National Education Association.
