The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities hosted a California Hispanic-Serving Institutions Summit on Oct. 9, 2022, to discuss higher education funding for underserved students and advocacy during the 36th Annual Conference at the Manchester Hyatt San Diego.
A panel on “Higher Education Legislation and Budget Review,” moderated by Eloise Gómez Reyes included State Senator Connie Leyva, Assembly Member Kevin McCarty and Assembly Member Sabrina Cervantes.
Discussions focused on California’s $308 billion budget which includes $41.6 billion for higher education institutions for the 2022-2023 academic year. Also discussed was how the budget is helping address pressing issues that HSIs continue to face, such as capacity building, deferred maintenance, and upgrades to labs to meet high demand.
College and university presidents, administrators, faculty and staff from California were among the attendees of the Summit.
