SAN ANTONIO – The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities has issued the following statement from HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores on recovery efforts in Puerto Rico as a result of Hurricane Fiona:
We stand in solidarity with Puerto Rico today as we did five years ago in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Puerto Rico is in dire need of support for those affected by the destruction from Hurricane Fiona. HACU is hopeful that the federal government assistance, approved by President Biden, will give much needed aid to the people of Puerto Rico and the many Hispanic-Serving Institutions located on the island.
This hurricane compounds the critical unresolved conditions from previous natural disasters. The island is now in a critical socioeconomic situation and faces an extended recovery process. Educational institutions will once again face numerous challenges to support their students and ensure that their educational goals are achieved. HACU reaffirms its commitment to supporting the people of Puerto Rico, especially their students and families, and the K-12 and higher education communities.
