US-ATLAS Education and Outreach Event

The ATLAS Experiment is hosting an outreach event on Feb 23, 2022, at 2-5pm EST for students interested in the 8 week summer program to work with US-ATLAS scientists. The program is a worldwide effort with over 3000 physicists and engineers - with a strong participation from 45 US universities and national labs (US-ATLAS) - at the CERN international laboratory located in Geneva, Switzerland. The project aims to improve our understanding of the Universe - its birth, evolution, current state, and future. The research offers a wide range of practical applications and educational opportunities. This event will serve as an informal introduction to ATLAS research and discuss US-ATLAS programs that new students and university groups can get involved in.

Although the primary target is underrepresented minority students, this workshop is also of interest to a broader audience, from URM undergraduate students to potential graduate student/postdoc/faculty mentors, and anyone interested in providing further inputs to a coordinated plan for attracting URMs. For more information and to register click here.

Connecting with Hispanic-Serving Institutions on a Proposed New NSF Directorate

The National Science Foundation (NSF) invites administrators and faculty from Hispanic-Serving Institutions to participate in a discussion about the concept of a new NSF Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships (TIP) that was included in the fiscal year (FY) 2022 President’s Budget Request for NSF. This discussion will be held virtually on February 25, 2022, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. ET.  

At this two-hour event, NSF will share information about the President’s Budget Request for TIP, including the proposed Regional Innovation Accelerators (RIA) program, and participants will be invited to join small-group discussions about the benefits, opportunities, and challenges that TIP and RIAs present for their institutions and the communities they serve. A key goal for the proposed TIP directorate is to serve the societal and economic needs of every part of the U.S. To this end, NSF believes contributions from diverse organization types, including Hispanic-Serving Institutions, are vital to realizing the mission of the proposed directorate and its potential new programs. For more information and to register click here.

DHS Announces Secretary's Honors Program for Summer 2022 Human Resources & Cybersecurity Internships

The Department of Homeland Security is now accepting applications from undergraduate and graduate students for the next cohort of the Secretary’s Summer Honors Program. This is a stipend-based, 12-week summer internship for students who are interested in Human Resources and Cybersecurity. Benefits include a $1,500/week stipend and $2,000/month housing allowance, if eligible. Some positions will be offered virtually.

The Department of Energy Announces $6 Million Investment to Train the Next Generation of Clean Energy Innovators

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced two funding opportunities, totaling $6.1 million, for student training and research on remediating legacy pollution from coal-based electricity generation and using carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) to generate low-carbon power. Of the $6.1 million, one funding opportunity will provide $3.1 million to support DOE’s University Coal Research (UCR) program, and the other opportunity will provide $2.2 million in support of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities and other Minority Institutions (HBCU-OMI) program for environmental remediation and CCUS research. Up to $800,000 in additional funding related to emissions control is available across both programs.

Combined, both funding opportunities will support approximately 20 student engineers and scientists working over 2-3 years on research projects related to technologies critical to advancing the Biden-Harris Administration’s goals of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Applications are due for both opportunities on April 4, 2022.
