HACU Commends California Governor Newsom on College Corps Program Offering College Students $10,000 towards debt free college
SAN ANTONIO – The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities has issued the following statement in response to the announcement that 45 California colleges and universities have been selected as inaugural partners of the College Corps Program, a service-based initiative creating debt-free access pathways to college.
“The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities applauds Governor Newsom and the Legislature for creating College Corps in the state budget to provide low-income students, including Dreamers, with $10,000 stipends and educational awards to do volunteer work” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. “These students are now able to do important community volunteer work, while making their dreams of a college degree a reality.”
College Corps will provide up to 6,500 college students, including Dreamers, with opportunities to support and learn from organizations working in three priority areas: K-12 Education, Climate Action and Food Insecurity.
“HACU is particularly pleased that many of the campuses selected for this program are Hispanic-Serving Intuitions. These institutions are historically underfunded, while serving the lowest income students. This new program will help provide service-learning opportunities for the students HSIs serve.”
