HACU launches 35th Annual Conference as virtual event
The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities officially launched its 35th Annual Conference, “35 Years of Championing Hispanic Higher Education Success,” a virtual event running from Oct. 25-27, 2021.
The Opening Plenary was moderated by Margaret Venable, president of Dalton State College and a member of HACU’s Governing Board. After a presentation of colors by the Joint Armed Forces Color Guard, followed by the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance, the Plenary featured a special message from U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and HACU president and CEO Antonio R. Flores on the renewal of HACU’s partnership with the USDA.
Flores, who celebrated 25 years of leading the Association this year, gave the State of HACU address, then presented the President’s Award of Excellence to Monte E. Pérez, Ph.D., former president of Los Angeles Mission College and chair of HACU’s Governing Board.
Two higher education leaders were also inducted into HACU’s Hall of Champions: Salme Harju Steinberg, Ph.D., president emerita of Northeastern Illinois University; and Frank Reyes, trustee of the San Bernardino Community College District.
