HACU announces speakers of 20th Annual Latino Higher Education Leadership Institute 

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities has announced the agenda and speakers of its 20th Annual Latino Higher Education Leadership Institute taking place virtually, Oct. 20, 2021. The one-day Institute will focus on essential skills and strategies for moving up the faculty and administrative ladders in higher education during challenging times.

Speakers and presentations will focus on key and timely topics for leading in new ways under the theme “Leadership in a Time of Adversity.” The Institute will include a morning presentation by Richard Wueste, J.D., consultant from AGB Search. An afternoon keynote address will be given by Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, Ph.D., chancellor of The City University of New York. 

Three concurrent roundtable workshop presentations will include the following topics: 

  • "During Challenging Times Student-Serving First, Student Enrolling Second: Lessons Learned,"presented by Abel Antonio Chávez, MBA, Ph.D., Western Colorado University. 
  • "Providing Support for Latinx Success in the Online Space," presented by Emily Esparza, National University System. 
  • "System Support for a Latinx-Thriving Educational Environment," presented by Frances Contreras, Ph.D., University of California, San Diego and Marcela Cuellar, Ph.D., University of California, Davis School of Education.

The Institute will conclude with a Presidents' Panel including, Teresa Leyba Ruiz, Ed.D., president of Glendale Community College; Timothy Mottet, Ed.D., president of Colorado State University; Juan Sánchez Muñoz, Ph.D., chancellor of University of California, Merced; and Suzanne Rivera, Ph.D., president of Macalester College. The panel session will be moderated by Alicia Martinez, assistant vice president for programs, services and international affairs at HACU.
