SAN ANTONIO – The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) has released the following statement commending President Biden for the introduction of his first budget, which includes many elements that will help bolster Hispanic success in higher education.
“HACU applauds the increase of discretionary funding for all Minority-Serving Institutions by $600 million as well as the doubling of funds for Hispanic-Serving Institutions and other MSIs to address the disparity and lack of opportunities in the STEM fields. These increases will put programs and support services in place to help enroll, retain, and graduate MSI students,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. “Additionally, we are grateful that President Biden’s Administration recognizes the needs of our students by increasing the maximum Pell Grant by $400 and expanding Pell eligibility to include DACA recipients.”
“This budget is a great first step towards achieving equity and inclusion in higher education. We look forward to working with the Administration and Congress to ensure the final passage of a budget that more fully addresses the needs of Hispanic-Serving Institutions and the students they serve,” added Flores.
