HACU statement on confirmation of Miguel Cardona as Education Secretary
SAN ANTONIO – The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) has released the following statement commending the Senate confirmation of Miguel Cardona, Ed.D., to serve as the next Secretary of Education.
“HACU congratulates Dr. Miguel Cardona on his confirmation as the next U.S. Secretary of Education,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. “He is a strong advocate for underrepresented students, and his expertise in the complexities of the U.S. educational pipeline will be critical as we work with him to ensure Hispanic students have the resources needed to succeed from K-12 through higher education.”
Cardona has spent two decades as a public-school educator, serving as a classroom teacher, school principal and a senior school district administrator. His personal experiences, having been a low-income and English-language learner student, add to his thorough understanding of the various challenges facing first-generation ELL students. In 2012, he was recognized as Connecticut’s National Distinguished Principal. Under his leadership, Connecticut became the first state to require high schools to offer courses on Latino and Black studies. Cardona brings substantial knowledge of historically underrepresented communities to this national leadership position.
“HACU looks forward to working with Secretary Cardona to seek greater investments for Hispanic-Serving Institutions,” added Flores.
