HACU releases its Platform Issues and Recommendations for 2020 Presidential Candidates
The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) has released its “Platform Issues and Recommendations for Presidential Candidates in 2020.” In a letter to the candidates, HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores requested a response on their perspectives as candidates for President of the United States on the issues included in the policy document.
"It's important that public discourse of the policy and programmatic concerns of Hispanic-Serving Institutions be included in party platforms to ensure inclusion of Hispanic educational issues in education,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores.
HACU serves as the voice for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), colleges and universities that enroll two-thirds of the 3.8 million U.S. Hispanic college students and a total of 6 million students from diverse backgrounds.
HSIs not only serve the majority of Hispanics, but also educate more African Americans than all HBCUs combined, more Native Americans than Tribal Colleges and Universities, more Asian Americans than any other cohort of institutions, and a sizeable number of white students. HSIs are the most diverse community of colleges and universities in the nation.
The Association will share the responses received from candidates on these issues of national importance, as voters consider candidates for the 2020 Presidential election.
HACU-members and supporters are urged to include these issues in their discussions with candidates and urge their response to encourage greater attention to the needs of Hispanic higher education and the increasingly important role Hispanics play in the U.S. workforce and American society at large.
HACU has requested official responses from the presidential candidates by September 25, 2020.
