SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) commends the increased investment in Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) in the fiscal year (FY) 2020 federal budget passed by Congress and signed by the President on December 21, 2019. The budget agreement funds the federal government through September 30, 2020. HSI programs are funded as follows:
“HACU applauds the significant increases to Hispanic-Serving Institutions’ programs in the FY 2020 federal budget passed by Congress last month,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. “This investment recognizes the increasingly crucial role of Hispanic-Serving Institutions in educating and training the fastest-growing segment of America’s workforce. While we are encouraged to see an increase in funding for HSIs, they still remain woefully underfunded.”
HSIs only receive, on average, 68 cents for every federal dollar going to all other colleges and universities annually despite educating a disproportionately low-income and underrepresented student population. HACU expresses its gratitude to the leadership of the Senate and House Appropriations Committees for their support and looks forward to continuing to work with Congress to increase federal resources to HSIs in FY 2021 and beyond.
HACU is also pleased that the U.S. Department of Education issued a notice inviting applications for new awards for FY 2020 for the Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (Title V, Part A) Program, with a deadline for transmittal of applications on February 10, 2020, as provided in the following link: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2019/12/27/2019-27984/applications-for-new-awards-developing-hispanic-serving-institutions-program
