HACU President Antonio R. Flores on the 2016 election

San Antonio, TX – The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities’ (HACU) President and CEO Antonio R. Flores has issued the following statement:

It will undoubtedly take some time to grasp the policy repercussions resulting from the November 8 Presidential elections, and their impact on Hispanic education is far from clear at the moment. However, the mission of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities to champion Hispanic success in higher education is now more important as ever. We invite all of our member institutions to renew the commitment to pursue that mission in a thoroughly bipartisan way, as we always have, knowing that Hispanic education is a national issue, not simply a partisan one. Assuring an educated workforce of tomorrow must be a priority for everyone.

Key issues will continue to be mission critical: assuring access and support for academic success for every qualified student, including adequate student financial aid; redressing funding inequities Hispanic-Serving Institutions experience; advocating for the DREAM Act (as part of a fair and sensible comprehensive immigration reform); and promoting programs thoroughly preparing students for the careers they choose and contributing their talents to the economy of our nation. HACU will also press for clarification on the new Administration’s position on the Higher Education Reauthorization Act, institutional accountability for federal funding, as well as finding solutions for student debt.

HACU’s new Advocacy Center becomes even more important as we all adjust to a new political landscape, along with a reset of national priorities. The promise of America will continue to ask the very best of us, as it always has. HACU stands ready to do its part, as it always has.
